Dyslexia doesn't just influence reading abilities, but so much more


Based on the previous insights we gained from the words of the doctor, in our next step, we performed quantitative & qualitative studies on children and their guardians to get to know more about their paper-based therapy experiences.

Gather qualitative information from the subjects, thus enhancing our understanding of their experiences, perceptions, and future inclination towards paper-based intervene method

Goal

Before reading: Prep Stage

  • Children possess no reading interest and motivation, will not actively read;

  • Have pressure before reading;

  • Parents don't know how to motivate children to read

During reading

  • 6 child reported encountering fear with an average rating of 4.2/5

  • 4 child reported fear from identifying long sentences, which made them lose track on their reading

  • Parents do not know how to guide children to read, neither know how to interact with children nor knowing the reading quality

Right after reading

  • 2.4/5 of the rating on level of accomplishment after reading

  • Have no idea of what they've learnt

  • Parents do not understand the child's mastery

State of not reading

  • Often more sensitive at heart

  • Struggle with talking to others, resulting in weak social connections

Pain Points

We identified the most intractable pain points to be the major user problems that need to be solved preferentially in paper reading

By revisiting the scenario where major user problems occur, we were able to look into users' core demands, and offer a set of corresponding solutions.

In the year 2023, over 8.5 million children in China are currently grappling with developmental dyslexia (DD), a typical reading impairment. However, The current paper-based pathological treatments to DD is not a great fit for their targeted community.

We were not to researching about ways to perfectly address dyslexia, but rather ways to instill children suffering from it with a sense of confidence and passion for reading.

Conclusion: The predictability and effectiveness of paper-based treatments in the present era are uncertain, often leading to multiple treatment sessions. This unpredictability has affected the interest of families in their persistency for paper-based interventions.

Following the evaluation of interview records, we recognized children having developmental dyslexia issues, along with their parents, as our principal users and classified all involved parties into 3 key types.
